Modesty in Dress

Modesty - DeffinitionI think we can all agree that this is a very sensitive topic, why would anyone talk about someone else’s clothing habbits… this could be very offensive! This is why we are hoping that you come to this topic with prayerful and open hearts, asking oneself what does God want in this topic and how can I change in order to please God. You see there is no point continuing if your has not been converted and does not discern spiritual things (Matthew 18:3, 1 Corinthians 2:14). Because the natural heart will always side with carnal or worldly ways and until we become converted we will never truly desire to do what God wants us to do.

We would first like to say that we are not for complete covering and do not want burkas, this is an extreme but we ask for people to be a balanced approach to this topic.

The best place to start would be what does the bible say about modesty in clothing and apparel, and the most obvious please to start is Paul’s message to Timothy a Bible student learning to be an elder/pastor;

1 Timothy 2:9 In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;

What is Modesty? One dictionary puts it as Freedoms from Vanity, boastfulness, ostentation or showy extravagance. another older dictionary says; The quality of state of being modest; that lowly temper which accompanies a moderate estimate of one’s own worth and importance; absence of self-assertion, arrogance , and presumption; humility respecting one’s own merit.

Lets face it this world has changed a lot, and it looks like modesty for clothes and self worth is probably the last thing on everybody’s mind. Paul predicted that in the end times people be more interested in themselves that anything or anyone else. In fact if you look at the last verse you will see that this message is for confessed Christians who have a ‘form’ of godliness but now power;

2 Timothy 3:1-5 This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. 2For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, 3Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, 4Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; 5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.

Though there is only one place in the Bible where it uses the word modesty and as Bible students we do require multiple verses to lay a firm foundation for Godly principles. There are quite a few places where the concept of modesty is easy to see;

Adam and Eve’s Coat

Without going in to much of what Adam or Eve was wearing when they were created, though we believe that they were clothed with Christ’s glory (Job 29:14), we want to focus on what happened after they had sinned. In Genesis 3:7 we see that after Satan deceived Adam and Eve they automatically became afraid and saw that they were naked. First thing they did was hid in the bushes and sewed fig leaves together as an apron. The question what is an apron? An apron is a small piece of material that covers the front, barely gets to the knees and has no sleeves, another words not so modest. Next thing God does is tell them what the consequences of their actions and then offer an animal sacrifice for their sins and uses the skin to make, what the KJV says coats. The KJV uses that word coat but the word can be translated as a robe, which is a lot more modest, usually covering not just the whole body but the arms and legs too. It is interesting that one of the first thing that God does is deals with their clothing, replacing something that was immodest to something that was modest. Sometimes read this story we often think that God is an angry God and is out for justice for breaking His commandments, but we don’t realise that Adam and Eve, including us, were already in trouble, we fail to see the pain that sin has caused us. He comes, not to chastise but to rescue and improve the situation that we are in. “For God sent not his son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through him might be saved.” John 3:17. And when He comes close to us, we fail to see the tears in His eyes.

The Two Women of Revelations

Woman Clothed with the SunIn the book of Revelations of Jesus, the apostle of John describes two very different women. When we read women we are talking about a church, according to Jeremiah 6:2 the daughter to Zion, God perceives as not just a woman but a comely and delicate woman, therefore we can safely say that in bible prophecy the woman in the church;

Revelation 12:1 And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars:

Revelation 17:3-4 So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns. 4And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication:

Whore BabylonWe can see that the two women are difference in appearance, one Gods church (the first woman) clothed and without jewelry, no mention of bright colours or ornaments. The other the countrified last day Church, clothed in purple and red and decked in gold, precious stones and pearls. I hope we can see here that God requires His people to be modest especially in the last times.

God doesn’t care about Clothing?

Some say that God doesn’t care what we wear but he only cares what is in the heart. We do agree with one point and that is God does care what is in the heart but he also states that what is in the heart does come out in action, Matthew 12:24. Now if God did not care about how we dress, the question arises is why would he focus so much on what The Great High Priest in the Service has to wear? The description is so detailed that he describes whet they should be wearing right down to the hem of his garment, Exodus 28. In fact he explains even what should he wear when he is in a particular role. For example in the days prior of the day of Atonement

When we see that what is in the heart generally comes out in actions and maybe we would be careful what we wear as it might reveal what is in the heart.

Are we a Stumbling Block?

Stumbling BlockAs faithful Christians the last thing we want to do is be a stumbling block for our Christian and I think most women do not realise the impact immodest clothing to a man’s thoughts and ultimately his salvation. Though not taking away the personal responsibility for men for his thoughts, the bible makes it clear that we should be responsible for our actions that might lead others astray, Ezekiel 3:20. The thing is, men do think differently to women, they are very visual and immodestly can lead men to thoughts that should not enter a man’s mind. When Christ says that even thinking lustfully we have committed adultery, sin (Matthew 5:28), then we can see it is a life or death matter. The below video might help women to should what guys think about when in comes to modesty;

On addition to this video there have been surveys done on men about modesty, the most in depth survey you can find at the following link; www.therebelution.com/modestysurvey

There also have been scientific research done on this topic; according to scientists when men see women in immodest clothing it stimulates there part of mind that is associated with tools, things people use and  possession.

According to the research

“Brain scans revealed that when men are shown pictures of scantily clad women, the region of the brain associated with tools, such as screwdrivers and hammers, lit up. Some men showed zero brain activity in the medial prefrontal cortex, which is the part of the brain that lights up when one ponders another person’s thoughts, feelings, and intentions.  Researchers found this shocking, because they almost never see this part of the brain shut down in this way. And a Princeton professor said, ‘It’s as if they are reacting to these women as if they are not fully human. It is consistent with the idea that they are responding to these photographs as if they were responding to objects, not people.’”

What about Jewellery?

JewelleryThe Bible might seem to be controversial or contradictory on this one, one could ask was it acceptable for Joseph to accepted the gold ring and necklace?

As stated before the at the only text about modest is from 1 Timothy 2:9 and Paul is quite clear that a Modest person does not have gold, pearls, or costly array. The last day God’s church does not have jewelry on her but the counterfeit church does and the fact that every time God calls for revival and reformation the first thing he asks for in the jewellery to be taken off

We must understand that every time God calls the for a revival and reformation he calls his people to take off their jewelry and bring them as a free will offering before the lord so that he can make an atonement for us.

Exodus 35:22 And they came, both men and women, as many as were willing hearted, and brought bracelets, and earrings, and rings, and tablets, all jewels of gold: and every man that offered offered an offering of gold unto the LORD.

Numbers 31:50 We have therefore brought an oblation for the LORD, what every man hath gotten, of jewels of gold, chains, and bracelets, rings, earrings, and tablets, to make an atonement for our souls before the LORD.

With it being so close to Christ’s return I pray that we will come to the foot of the cross with our free will offerings of anything that might hinder us from God making an atonement for us.

The Truth about Modesty

We have therefore brought an oblation for the LORD, what every man hath gotten, of jewels of gold, chains, and bracelets, rings, earrings, and tablets, to make an atonement for our souls before the LORD.
